Who Am I?

One of my first summer jobs was working on a road construction crew, building and maintaining a local Saskatchewan Rural Municipality's roads.  At 15 years of age, I had to ride my dirt bike to work down back roads each day. The crew worked long days 6 days a week and it really taught me responsibility and dedication to a job. On each new road job, the surveyors would come out several time to set and check grades and I had an opportunity to do some intermediate surveying as part of the crew and thought it may be a good choice for a career. Many years later, after trying several different occupations, I decided to continue my education and attended college in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, graduating with a diploma in Surveying Engineering Technology. After graduation I moved to Dauphin MB, and worked for a local surveying company, met and married my wife and started a family.

I soon learned that working away from home was not what I wanted for my family and I was fortunate that I was able to find a position as a Junior Draftsmen with the City of Dauphin. This was the start of my municipal career that lasted 24 years.

During my first couple of years with the City, I was able to gain the experience and knowledge to obtain my Certified Engineering Technology (CET) designation from CTTAM and have been a member in good standing for over 20 years.

Over the past 24 years i have been fortunate to hold many roles within the organization and gain a vast knowledge of all aspects of municipal operations.

  • As a draftsman I prepared construction drawings, key plans and any many other type of record drawings that municipalities need to maintain and grow their community. During that same time I used my training in IT to maintain the City's IT infrastructure and eventually became the City's IT Manager.
  • After a few years as a draftsman I moved to the position of Building Inspector and Development Officer. I am a fully trained Building/Plumbing Inspector and currently hold BCQ status with the Manitoba Building Officials Association. I have over 22 years of experience managing and enforcing codes and zoning bylaws as well as participating in the creation and updating of zoning bylaws and development plans.

  • In the late 90's, with the construction of a brand new state of the art water treatment plant, I was asked to assume the position of Water Treatment Plant Manager along with my IT Manager duties.  With my strong technology background and willingness to learn, it was expected that I would be able to quickly learn the operations and management of the water treatment plant. I held these two positions for many years and eventually became a certified operator. I currently hold operator certification as follows:

    • Water Treatment Class IV

    • Water Distribution Class II

    • Wastewater Treatment Class II

    • Wastewater Collection Class II

Over the past 21 years I have been heavily involved in Operator certification including holding the Chair of the Water and Wastewater Technician Provincial Advisory Council with Manitoba Apprenticeship and the Chair of the Manitoba Water and Wastewater Association.

  • In 2012 I assumed the position of Director of Public Works & Operations and spent the next couple of years immersing myself in the public works aspect of operations as Utility operations had been my domain for many years. I have gained a wealth of knowledge in road construction and maintenance, storm drainage, equipment procurement, solid waste, recycling and diversion, active transportation and so much more.

  • In 2017, I embarked upon a learning journey to become the City's Asset Management (AM) lead. I have obtained accreditation as both an Asset Management Professional (AMP) from NAMS Canada and Certified Asset Management Professional (CAMP) from PEMAC. I have dedicated a vast amount of time over the past five years learning what it is to truly manage assets.

At the end of April 2021 I decided it was time for me to move on to a new chapter in my career. I am very fortunate to have been able to spend a large part of my career in such a diverse setting. It is my hope that I can use the knowledge and experience that I have gained as result to the benefit of other communities.

Please let me know if there is anything that I can provide you assistance with. Drop me an email or give me a call and lets start the conversation.
